Your wood shake roof — preservation, repair, or replacement?
Cedar and wood shake roofing in Colorado has a long service life when it is understood. This guide covers the three decisions every owner eventually faces.
Wood shake is not a simple material. It ages differently depending on exposure, ventilation, installation quality, and maintenance history. The right answer for your roof depends on what is actually there — not on age alone, and not on a storm report.
Your roof has life remaining
Cedar shake installed in the 1980s and 1990s can still be performing well. If the shakes are sound, the ventilation is adequate, and the flashings are intact, preservation — cleaning, treating organic growth, and monitoring — may be the right answer. A look at the actual condition is the starting point.
Localized damage, sound structure
Isolated splits, a few missing shakes, or a flashing failure do not necessarily mean a full replacement. When the damage is contained and the underlying structure is sound, targeted repair extends the roof's service life. The question is whether the damage is truly localized — or whether it is a sample of something more widespread.
End of service life
Some shake roofs have reached the point where repair is no longer the right answer — widespread splitting, compromised underlayment, or structural deck issues. Replacement is a significant decision. It deserves an honest assessment of what is there, not a sales pitch.
What Crown Eagle does
Crown Eagle reviews the exterior — roof surface, edges, flashings, drainage, and the full system. The review documents what is there. A recommendation follows from what is found. No verdict before the look.
